WKZQ Reunion

A BIG Thank You!!!!
Now that the reunion is over and most of the Q Crew have returned home, we want to take the time to thank all who came or left messages here on the website. We had a great time and are reviewing some photos and video to share with you soon.

Best wishes to you from the Q Crew!

Check out the QRock Radio Studio construction shots in the photo gallery.

The Beginning
From what started as a small radio outpost on the edge of town, down a dirt road, surrounded by corn, and goats, there rose a radio revolution that is as strong today as it was back then. From 1973 to 1997, Tom Rogers and Bill Hennecy took WKZQ from the back room of Grand Strand Broadcasting Corporation's AM WTGR facility to the world-wide fame that it enjoyed during the 24 years that ensued from that first day. This is the story of those men and women who worked in the creative freedom of that era and lived the most incredible journey in radio history. Stay tuned...

Some Guidelines

Hey, now that the WKZQ Reunion site is up and running and a lot of you have signed up and started uploading photos, and telling stories, we want to set a few ground rules for the use of the reunion site. First, and this does not discount the great people who came after August 1, 1997, but this is a WKZQ Reunion for the Grand Strand Broadcasting era employees. We welcome ALL employees of WKZQ, whether they worked for Grand Strand, Hirsch or NextMedia. We cannot help it that you missed the glory years (as far as we are concerned). We still love you and want you to get an idea of what it was like. For everyone's benefit, please keep photos of non-WKZQ events to a minimum or not at all. Facebook is there for you. Thank you for understanding. This is a website celebrating the WKZQ era from 1973 to 1997. The only other item to keep in mind is that this is a lightly moderated site and your postings of images, video, and stories should be in good taste, without totally ruining the story. Have fun! We are busy working on the Official WKZQ Reunion Live from Myrtle Beach, so stay tuned.

Official Disclaimer: This website is operated by a group of WKZQ Alumni who worked from 1973-1997 and it is not affiliated with NextMedia Radio or it's affiliates, current licensees of WKZQ.

Stories that weren't told at the reunion, but should have

It was great to see everyone this weekend. Henneccy was able to give us a great history of the station. He pointed out how we all worked together to make the station great.

There wasn't time for all of us to tell stories about our fun times with our co-workers. I think we should all join in and recall some of our favorite stories.

I remember when we did camel races on the beach during Sun Fun. It was decided that Chris William would ride the camel and not sure who was racing against him. Chris… Continue

Condolences to Bob Scarborough

Our hearts go out to Bob and his family. His mother passed away on Monday 9/22 in Charleston, SC. She died of complications due to cancer. As a primary organizer of the KZQ Reunion, i'm sure Bob was looking forward to the event, however his attention to the matters at hand will probably limit his time with us now, and his duties will have to be picked up by volunteers.

You may express your wishes here, and someone will be sure that Bob gets to see them, or speak to him if the opportunity arises… Continue

What Has Sports Got To Do With Anything?

Hello Q Crew!

I apologize for being slack over the summer. I have had all these great stories that I've wanted to share before we got together for the upcoming reunion. Coulda. Shoulda. Didn't happen.

I blame it on football, baseball, basketball and motorsports. In addition to spending most of my life at my tiny radio station in Loris. I have embarked on a most interesting endeavor.....Sports Radio.

I'm no Morgan Patrick, but I figured I'd pursue this idea to get involved with sports radio.… Continue

Working with John Lawton

Who is John Lawton? Lead singer for Uriah Heep from 1976-80. That's me in the background in 1999 getting ready to do a number with John who was here at the beach for our Heepvention. Carrie Michaels will probably remember him as he performed with her and her band at Froggy bottoms during that September Night. I wish I had some pictures of me during my Rock 102 Days but I don't. Not even an Air Check. Sorry. My God, were that young once in the pic above. What 34 years can do hey? They were great… Continue
